Performance boost for Manila servers

I was wondering why my server at Berkman was getting slow at posting items to the home page. When I noticed the same slowness on a UserLand server, I began to think the problem was in the weblogs.com pinging. That server is under an increased load (we have to do something about that) and it takes longer to respond. I figured I could increase the performance by having Manila do the pinging in a separate thread instead of waiting for a response. The result -- it's much much faster.

This should be much much faster

I'm pretty sure I've found a huge performance boost in Manila. If it works, this should post virtually instantaneously. Don't touch that dial.
